Leonardo da Vinci beschreibt das Wesen und die Wirkung der Farbe Blau als immateriell, Blau ist keine Farbe der Luft, sondern eine metaphysische Mischung des Sonnenlichts mit der „Schwärze der Weltfinsternis“. Für Goethe war Blau eine der zwei reinen Farben.
Blau ist eine der Lieblingsfarben vieler Menschen, da sie Ruhe und Harmonie ausstrahlt. Blau wird mit Ausspannen, Ausruhen „der blaue Montag“, „die Fahrt ins Blaue“ assoziiert.
Blau als Sinnbild der unbegrenzten Dimensionen, der Distanz, der Ferne, des Himmels und des Wassers.
Blau steht für Sicherheit, für Tradition, blaue Kleidung ist unauffällig, korrekt, eine Farbe des arbeitenden Volkes.
Blau symbolisiert Geist und Ordnung, Gesetz und Macht. Blau ist in der christlichen Tradition die Farbe von Maria. Das blaue Kleid und der blaue Mantel weisen Maria als Himmelkönigin aus.
Der französische Künstler Yves Klein ließ sich das von ihm entwickelte Ultramarinblau unter der Bezeichnung „International Klein Blue“ patentieren.
Und wer kennt sie nicht die „Blaue Stunde“, in der das besondere intensive Blau des Himmels die Dichter und Romantiker schon seit Jahrhunderten in literarische Verzückung versetzt.
